This die cut machine by manufacturer Provo Craft, typically used by scrapbookers and other crafters, has many features and add-on accessories, including the Classmate line of educational cartridges, which will not only make the job of teaching easier, but over time, will also save schools money.

The most obvious example is the classroom bulletin board. In the past, teachers either had to purchase expensive die cuts to decorate their classroom bulletin board, or would have to painstakingly cut out letters and pictures by hand, in order to create a display that caught the attention and interest of their students. The Cricut Expression has the capability of cutting letters and other shapes in a variety of sizes, spanning from a quarter of an inch to almost twenty-four inches in size. Using this tool, educators are able to create an appealing bulletin board with nothing more than a small stack of card stock or other colored paper.

Although the Expression is great for cutting basic lettering and shapes, Provo Craft is specifically targeting those in the education field with its line of Classmate cartridges, which are designed for use in the classroom. This line of Cricut cartridges for early childhood educators and elementary school teachers can be used for teaching several subjects, including language, phonics, social studies, and even cursive.

Using the 50 States cartridge, for example, teachers can create a cutout of each state. In addition to being used for displays, these die cuts can be pieced together by students to form a puzzle of the United States, making it a useful tool for social studies and geography lessons.

Also part of the Classmate line, the Word Builders cartridge series is designed to help elementary students with their language, phonetic, and spelling skills. Using the Word Builders cartridges, educators can make puzzle-type cutouts of letters and groups of letters. These die cuts, when pieced together in the correct combinations by students, form words.

This is just a couple of the many ways that these types of die cuts can be used directly for instructing students. Whether it's making puzzles, or creating their own educational version of popular children's games, such as "Go Fish", or even making bookmarks and stickers to reward students for their work, teachers can use the Cricut Expression countless ways in the classroom.

This article was written by Dawn Hall, who recommends shopping for the Cricut Expression and Cricut cartridges at DiscountDiecutCartridges.com.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Dawn_Hall

Fast Electric RC Cars - The Basics of Choosing an RC Car

How fast are they really?

If your interested in buying an electric RC car then you likely have a few questions regarding what you can expect from them. The main question that arises the most kind of speeds can it reach. Fast electric RC cars, the ones that are tuned just right and have a custom engine are still no match to a gas powered RC car. You can realistically expect speeds of 30-45 MPH on an average electric RC car and 50-75 MPH on a more advanced and properly tuned vehicle.

Battery Life/Run Time

Another factor that should be considered before making a purchase is the battery life. The battery life on an average RC car will give you 15 to 20 minutes of run time - full speed. Some radio control cars will deplete energy faster depending on accessories like working lights, alarms and the like. Check the battery charge rating on the specifications sheet to ensure it will run on a single charge according to your expectations.

Space Requirements/Where To Race

Unlike gas powered RC cars, electric RC cars can be driven/raced in apartment complexes due to being slower and the reduced noise levels no worrying about complaining neighbors! Most fast electric RC cars are built with standard street tires which are smaller and use less rubber. This is ideal if your in town and you'll only be driving on pavement. If your into offroad racing then you will need to upgrade your RC car tires to a larger size with better tread for increased grip.

Your Local Hobby Shop

Hobby shops often have race tracks and strips of pavement specifically for racing RC cars - a great place to have some fun and learn some interesting things about RC cars from other enthusiasts. If you really decide you like the RC hobby world then you can even enter racing competitions that take place at these tracks and have a chance at winning prizes! Electric RC cars may be fast but they are no competition for a gas powered RC car so you may be out of luck unless they specifically have different competition groups for gas and electric RC cars.

About The Radio Control Signal

One final note pertains to the signal output by your controller. On cheaper RC cars the signal may interfere with other RC cars and you may experience dead spots where you lose control of your RC car. Better models use a specific signal "channel" for each type of RC car that is built - if the same two RC cars are together you have the option of switching to another "channel" so this does not happen.

If you would like to learn more than visit http://www.Saber-RC-Cars.com, an informative website about owning, taking care of and tuning fast electric RC cars which includes a questions and answers section and video content.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Alex_Desatoff

Coloring Products For Kids - Tips For Parents and Teachers

Coloring pages are a simple and easy way to keep kids happy and entertained while they are learning. The internet is the perfect medium for finding and producing coloring products for kids. Coloring pages are now available in digital form e.g. pdf files. Simply find the pages your child likes, order the product and print out the pages. It's the perfect use of the internet - simple and affordable.

The alternative is to buy coloring books in a shop or order the physical coloring book online. If you order the physical book online, it can take ages to receive it. Then you have to wait for the item to be delivered. If you buy a coloring product in digital form, you receive it within minutes of purchase. Normally, once your payment is made, an email is instantly sent to you and includes your purchase.

Digital coloring pages are much cheaper than expensive coloring books. You can print pages over and over again, whereas traditional products only allow each page to be colored once. You can decide what pages to print. There are pages kids will like and pages they will not want to color. Digital coloring books give you the choice of which pages to print and quantity of pages.

If you are only printing pages you want, there's less wasted paper, so you are also doing your bit for the environment. You don't have to store physical coloring books. All of the coloring books are stored on your computer or storage device such as a DVD. The internet has made many things easier for us, and this is one great example of this.

S.C. However you do not only need power tools in order to successfully complete many different projects, you should also consider buying some hand woodworking tools. It can be confusing to know exactly which tools someone should buy when they are first starting, but there are simple ways to build your collection without spending a fortune.

Hand Tools you Might Require for Woodworking Projects

- Clamps - You will need to buy these in a number of different sizes for different types of wood. These are fairly cheap and you should be able to find them for quite a reasonable price. It's fine to buy these used if you want.
- Chisels - You'll need quite a few chisels in a number of different sizes
- Wire Brush - The stiffer the better
- Saw - You will need several types of saws, a tenon saw, back saw and dovetail saw. These get well used and need to be kept sharp.
- Planes - These are needed to smooth the surfaces of wood. You at least need a simple one when you are starting.
- Scrapers - Use a hand scraper and paint scraper
- Files - You should buy a collection of different files in different sizes.

Other Tools You should Look at

- Hammer - Invest in a high quality hammer
- Mallet - This is vital for hitting your chisel
- Wrenches - In a number of different sizes
- Screwdrivers
- Tape measure
- T bevel
- Level
- Steel Ruler
- Set Squares
- Awls
- Putty Knife
- Protractor
- Utility Knife
- Pliers - Choose ones with needle nose tips and channel lock.

Tracking down great priced handtools

It can be very expensive to set up your own woodworking shop. It may be tempting just to rush out and buy the cheapest hand tools that you can lay your hands on in order to save money. However you really do get what you pay for. It is a false economy to buy these cheap tools as they are unlikely to last anywhere near as long as high quality tools. If possible stick to a reliable brand name such as Armstrong, Stanley or snap on tools. It is very important to consider buying quality tools for long term use.

It's a sensible idea to think about buying used tools. You just have to make sure that they are in good condition. Very old German hand tools are made to a very high quality and are pretty easy to track down. The quality of these older tools are often much better than the cheaper newer tools. It is important that you make sure that you carefully inspect the condition of these used tools.

You can find hand tools at local yard sales, take a look in your local newspaper to see if anyone is selling anything you might be interested in. Also take note of any garage sales which are being held.

Another really good way to find tools for yourself is to go to flea markets. These will offer many different tools in the same place which will mean you don't have to travel to different yard sales to buy everything you need. It is normally possible to negotiate on price at flea markets, so you've got to be willing to negotiate!

The best way to get cheap tools at flea markets is to go towards the end of the day. Many people will be more willing to reduce the prices to get rid of them at the end of the day. You might get a discount if you buy all of your tools from the same person.

Greg Hansward's articles can be found on quite some websites associated with hand tools in woodworking. You can see his abstracts on handtools at http://www.insidewoodworking.com and many different sources for handtools news.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Greg_K._Hansward

Buy A Sewing Machine With These 10 Buying Tips

These days, when you decide you want to buy a sewing machine, there is a large range of styles, models, and prices from which to choose and can be rather confusing. However, if you know what to look for while you're buying, it's a bit easier.

Of all the tools you'll buy for your sewing room, the sewing machine is the largest investment by far, so you'll want to make sure it is the right one for you.

1) First, decide on how you'll be utilizing your sewing machine. Will you be sewing clothing, piecing and creating quilts, working with leather or denim, or creating embroidered items? The reason this is so important is because each sewing machine features different capabilities and you'll want to choose the one that will meet your specific needs.

2) Do you want an electric, mechanical, computerized, compact or serger sewing machine? The answer to this question will narrow your field quite a bit.

3) Do some research on sewing machine brand names, features, and price ranges. Check customer reviews as well to get an idea how well people either like or dislike a certain model of machine.

4) Before you even leave the house, decide on how much you can spend for your machine. The range of prices for sewing machines can range from under $100 for a basic model, to over $8,000 for a machine that does practically everything for you except cut your fabric. Be careful not to buy a sewing machine based on everything you want to learn "someday", but rather for the purposes for which you'll actually use it once you bring it home.

5) It is a good idea to attend some classes in your local area and talk to other people about their sewing machine. Be sure to ask a lot of questions! Some stores have several machines set up and will allow customers to give them a trial run.

6) Where will you spend your time sewing? If you have a larger space available, the size of your machine may not matter. However, if you are using a smaller area, you may want to consider a compact version to save on space.

7) Will you buy a sewing machine online or from a locally owned store? If you are purchasing online, make sure the dealer is reputable. Check the reviews left for the dealer and make sure to verify their address and phone number. Given the weight of a sewing machine, inquire about the shipping costs prior to placing an order, and ask about their return policy.

Some companies will ask you to pay return shipping costs and possibly a fee. Even if you decide to purchase a machine online, be sure to first visit a local dealer to try the machines in which you are interested.

8) Make a list of the items you either already enjoy making, or items you wish to make and take it with you when you visit a local dealer. Take along samples of fabrics you use most.

9) Test the basic stitches on the machine, as well as any other features of the machine you might use. All stitching should appear balanced, not loose.

10) Ask the dealer about the availability of replacement parts if they should be needed, the cost of servicing the machine, optional upgrades, and warranties. A reputable dealer will be glad to answer any questions you have and allow you to try out any machine in their store. Be sure to ask also if they offer classes as a bonus with your sewing machine purchase.

Although it is probably very simple to buy a sewing machine from an online dealer, there are several advantages to purchasing your machine from a local dealer. He is only a phone call away, he has direct support from the manufacturers of the machines he sells, and he probably already has a repair department on site, which means you won't have to wait as long for your machine to be fixed.

Let's say you decide in a few years that you want to upgrade your machine. Some local dealers will gladly accept the machine they sold to you as a trade-in on an upgraded model, which could save you some money.

Buying a sewing machine can be an enjoyable and educational experience, as long as you are prepared ahead of time. You'll have the tools to make an informed decision and be very happy with the machine you do purchase. Once you've purchased your sewing machine, all that's left to do is take it home and start getting creative!

Best Summer Yarns for Knitting

It seems like last week we were taking down our Christmas trees, and now winter is over and the warm weather is already upon us.

As our knitting thoughts turn to lighter patterns and more open-weave designs, the question that pops into my mind more than any other is.. just which yarn do I use for these summer patterns? So often I see many different types of yarn in those wonderful knitting magazines and newer books, so, just which ones are the best for summer knitting?

After knitting with many different types of yarns, over the years, I can recommend some fibers which definitely fit the bill, much more so than others, when it comes to knitting anything you might wear or use in the warmer weather.

And remember, with the warm weather come special occasions such as weddings, proms, even graduations, as well as outdoor events where you go from day into evening. In the most sultry night there is nothing like a beautiful shawl or unique shrug or afghan which not only protects but looks gorgeous as well.

The first type of yarn, which is almost a "given" is cotton yarn. Cotton is very easy to knit with and comes in so many colors nowadays; most bigger brand names come in a cotton variety. In fact, some of the simple open-air shawls or shrugs look fabulous when knitted in a cotton yarn. Don't forget all the pretty placemats and bath items you can also knit using cotton yarn.

Then, there are cotton blends. Examples of these yarns would be cotton and merino, or cotton and worsted weight yarn. Another great yarn mix is cotton and linen. Any type of summer pattern can be knitted with these yarns; I especially like cool sweaters and loose vests for these yarns.

As always, worsted weight yarn is as popular as ever. Every name brand carries worsted weight; and the color selection is wonderful. Worsted weight can be used for anything and everything; vests, shawls, shells, sweaters, summer afghans and every kind of accessory, as well.

DK weight yarn is another great choice for summer projects. This type of yarn is very popular with shawls and vests. This yarn is a light-worsted-weight yarn between worsted and sport yarn, and knits quickly for any project you can think up!

Buttery-soft, smooth to the touch silk yarns are always a big hit for lighter knit patterns. They knit up into feathery creations, fun to wear close to your skin and with graceful curves and drape effects that give you the edge every time! Another yarn, soft as silk, is bamboo yarn. It, too, comes in a variety of colors and is a great summer yarn.

And, don't forget the summer colors. That may be the hardest thing of all; choosing between all those luscious shades and tints. Colors like 'cotton candy', 'mint leaf', 'peaches and cream', 'sweet orchid', 'lemonade', 'breeze', 'popsicle', and 'white sparkle' are just a very few of the versatile and irresistible yarns to knit with!

No matter which ones you choose, you just can't lose! So, if you are like me, you will be out to the yarn store just as soon as you can!

How To Select the Right Kind Of Sewing Fabric

Whenever you decide to do a sewing project, the right quality of fabric is necessary. Also there are so many colors, styles, designs that it can make your choice very difficult. Nevertheless, if care and the appropriate amount of thought are put into the decision, a good selection can be made.

While selecting sewing fabric, the pattern that is being employed often is very helpful to find what type of sewing fabric would be the best selection for that garment or creation.

In spite of this, many people believe in making things which do not have patterns, so they don't get any suggestions. When such a case arises, people should choose the best fabric possible, but problems can develop from this too.

Selecting Sewing Fabric With No Pattern

When somebody works on a project without a proper design, it can be difficult for them to choose the specific type of fabric. Deciding on which color is not a big deal but there is something which belongs to every specific person and his or her opinion of which color suits them better will appear the best for that particular garment or item that is being made.

In addition to the type of color that is selected, the type of fabric is also very important to numerous people. Some fabrics are light whereas others are heavy, but this is not the only matter to deal with.

Another potential concern is how much stretch or what is called 'give' the fabric will have, as the application that the fabric will be used can be strongly influenced by the stretching capacity that the fabric contains.

Where to Go to Select a Sewing Fabric

There are lots of stores where a person can find a fabric of their choice for sewing purposes and what is being created will give the person a good impression of the starting place for searching for the fabric.

Some people will begin their search from thrift stores or at yard sales, so that they can get good bargains, but their fabrics are typically older and out fashion which doesn't reflect the latest trends.

Those people who need good quality fashion at less expensive price can start their search from discount stores. They are good quality products as well as very fashionable and at affordable rate as well.

As for those people who are less than concerned about finances will go where the more-up scale fabric stores are in order to buy their sewing fabric.

Sewing Fabric Store - Getting the Materials and Supplies You Need

As a hobby sewing has become a thing of the past as we rush along through the day having everything ready-made, to wear, eat and use. Did you know there is an easy way and a hard way to shop a quilt show? We've been a vendor at quilt shows for many years now and we have some tips that will help you enjoy quilt shows even more than you do now! (If you can believe that is possible!)

First, it will be helpful for you to bring a tote bag or back pack with you. You will need a large bag to hold your purchases and to keep them together! Carrying several small bags can be a nuisance and can get in the way of looking at quilts and supplies. It's also easy to lose your treasures this way. A back pack will allow you to keep your hands free, a major advantage!

A fanny pack is perfect for your cash, credit, cards, business cards and return address labels. We all know what the cash and credit cards are for. Business cards, if you have them, are great for contacts, business and otherwise, that you make at the show. They are also great for entering drawings. You can drop a card in the drawing box and be on your way.

Return address labels are wonderful for mailing lists you'd like to be on. You won't have to wait in a long line to get your hands on a mailing list. You simply stick and go! These address labels save you time and keep you from having to write your name and address while hunched over a table, bags slipping down your arm. You also won't have to put down your tote bag or find a pen. Plus there's the legibility factor. If you write like I do, some names and addresses can be so hard to read that the catalogs mailed out never make it to their proper destinations. People that write hieroglyphics will seldom see interesting catalogs make it to their front door.

You may have heard that when you first enter a quilt show, it is usually best to head to the left. As a rule of thumb, people tend to go to the right. This act of "rightness" is just human nature, unless you're left handed and then you tend to go to the left automatically. But this way, by following this tip, you can more easily avoid the crowds, spend more time shopping and less time looking over heads.

When traveling with other quilters, it's important to put your name on your own supplies. Even after only one day on the road, all pairs of Fiskars start to look the same!

It's also a good idea when traveling to carry your thread, scissors and other quilting supplies for projects, or pieces of sample fabrics for matching embellishments for example, in clear plastic, zippered cosmetic cases. This is so convenient and inexpensive, you could use one case for each project to refer to while at your favorite quilt shows. In addition, you know how to respect your quilt vendors. Children or grandchildren should not handle the vendor's merchandise, since little ones can make alphabet soup out of appliques and turn white doilies brown with dirty hands.

If you're waiting in a long line, it might be a good idea to use cash instead of a credit card. Credit cards take longer to process and can hold you up. A lot of vendors also accept checks. Checks with pre-printed phone numbers are helpful to you as well as those people who are waiting in line. I'll never forget the lady who forgot her phone number and tried to remember what it was while six people waited with baited breath behind her!

A great idea to help you save time is to do your homework before attending a quilt show and preview products with the quilt show vendors who have websites on the internet. This is also a great way to follow-up with vendors after a show is over. Some vendor websites have feedback forms or email where you can give suggestions for desired products. Other vendors have toll free phone numbers you can use to call in orders. Many websites list upcoming quilt shows.

So the next quilt show you attend, don't forget to apply those quilt show tips you've just learned! With this information in hand, happy quilt show shopping!

In addition to the above quilt show tips, you can find quilting tips and a "Did you know?" section with interesting sewing facts at http://www.quiltware.com You can enter a monthly drawing where you can win quilting-related items. If you want to find them at cheap prices, be sure to check out:

Estate sells.

Yard sells

Flea Markets

From friends and family members

Thrift stores

Once you have a nice inventory on hand, it is time for you to start advertising your business.

No matter what the size of your business is, you need to advertise.

If you own an antique store, try your best to advertise in your local newspaper, past our fliers, put your ad on school bulletins, and do what you can and what you can afford.

If you are setting up at flea markets and the, at least have some business cards made up to give your customers. Then they have a way to get in touch with you in the future when they want another certain antique or wish to sell one.

If you are selling your antiques online, make sure you're URL or ads are added to message boards and the like.

If you find that your antique business isn't making you as much money as quickly as you would like, you may want to expand a little and add such services as:

Consignment sales

This is where you take in an antique from a potential seller. You make a deal with the seller that you will sell the piece for X amount. If it sells, by a certain deadline, you agree to take an agreed upon percentage and the seller gets the rest of the money.

These kinds of sales allow you to add to your merchandise, without any risk of you losing money. Plus, this helps to draw people into your store.

Refinishing or repairing antiques

Are you talented at actually refinishing and repairing? If you are, then you may consider adding these skills to your resume to make more money.

Appraising antiques

Are you good at appraising (finding out the value) of an antique? Then why not charge people for this talent?

Selling antiques can be a very profitable business. It can also be a rewarding one.

Jeffrey Meier of Jam727 Enterprises at http://www.Jam727.com offers information articles on a wide variety of subjects including Antiques at http://www.jam727.com/antiques/index.php

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jeffrey_Meier

Old Singer Sewing Machines - The Featherweight Series Are A Must Have

Perhaps the survival of an old Singer sewing machine can be attributed to the fact that the company has always placed high regard not just on quality but also durability. They are made of the strongest materials, and they are highly resistant to any substance that can easily cause deterioration.

Knowing the Age of Your Singer Sewing Machine

The first commercially sold sewing machines from Singer were released in the market during 1851. The company has then stopped manufacturing any of the older models today, though you can still search for their reproductions or replicas. A long time ago, these old Singer sewing machines were identified based on their serial number, which is then recorded in their log book.

Thus, if you want to know how old your sewing equipment is or if it's truly a real Singer machine, you can check out their official website. You are provided with a list of serial numbers, which can either have one- or two-letter prefixes. The earliest ones use numbers, not letter. However, because there are some log books that have got lost, you will not be able to confirm the authenticity of those manufactured from 1851 to 1870.

Featherweight Portable Singer: A Certified Old Singer Sewing Machine

One of the oldest Singer sewing machines is the Featherweight Portable. It was first launched in the market sometime in the 1930s. This portable sewing machine is paired with a 3-way table, with legs that are very strong.

The working surface was very large, which means it could accommodate wider fabrics and much bigger sewing projects. The surface was left smooth and finished finely so you will be able to sew and cut the fabrics without any hassle. Owners even used it as their dining or poker table.

Because it's portable, this old Singer sewing machine can be easily kept aside or stored in your cabinet. This had also been ideal for those who were living in smaller houses or for students who need a sewing machine for their classes or in their dorm rooms. If you wish to add extra space, you could make use of the extension table.

Today, the original Featherweight Portable comes by real hard. You have to scour for them intently in the World Wide Web. A perfect alternative for it, meanwhile, can be the Singer 132 Featherweight Compact Efficiency Sewing Machine.

Just like the Featherweight portable, the Singer 132 Featherweight Compact Efficiency sewing machine is extremely handy. In fact, it only weighs a mere 15 pounds. The design is also compact. What you can't deny, however, is its exceptional work. It has the ability to produce 32 stitch functions and is extremely easy to operate, making it an ideal sewing equipment for beginners.

One of the greatest obstacles in old Singer sewing machines is how you can conveniently place your thread into your sewing machine. This is completely eliminated in this newer technology. Within 6 seconds, you can already place the thread into the system. It can also immediately adjust the tension of your needle threads to prevent any creases or waves in your sewn fabrics.

For more information about old and modern Singer sewing machines, visit sewing machine reviews site and we'll help you find the best model for your needs.

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Tomaz_Mencinger

Rug Hooking Kits - What To Look For In A Good Rug Hooking Kit

A good rug hooking kit requires very few items, is relative inexpensive, and the craft itself is very easy to learn. And unlike a lot of crafts... when you make a "mistake", you can simple pull the wool strips out and re-use them. Of course, the larger the size of the project in the kit, the more expensive the kit will cost.

If you are just learning to be a "hooker"... then starting with a small kit offers a few advantages: (1) price and (2) short amount of time to complete, and (3) a less expensive frame can be used for small projects.

Every Rug Hooking Kit should include:

* Burlap or Monk's cloth with the design drawn on it.

* A ball handle hook

* Enough binding to put around the edge

* Enough strips of 100% wool to complete the project (My kits use strips cut 3/8" to 1/4")

* Some kits include a picture to use as a color guide and others have the colors marked on the burlap/Monk's cloth

* OPTIONAL - some kits are offered WITH and WITHOUT a frame

A little "hookin" history...

Rug hooking was one of the first American crafts. It was a craft born of necessity as the early settlers tried to warm the cold damp floors in their homes. They would use the empty burlap feed sacks out of the barn, a hook fashioned out of a nail, and old torn and ragged clothing.

The husband would normally make the hook out of a nail by driving it into a piece of wood and then grinding a "hook" where the nail head had been. The frame normally consisted of four boards tied or nailed together to form a square or rectangle. The women would set up the rug by the kitchen stove and hook using the old clothing that had been torn into strips. Often the children would tear or cut the rags into strips for their Mothers to use.

Rug hooking is a rich part of our American heritage. And even today, remains an enjoyable past time. Generations after our ancestors arrived in the new world, rug hooking can still be carried out without electricity or technology... the same way it was carried out years ago.

Unfortunately, because the rugs were actually USED on the floors, very few have survived for viewing today. If you are fortunate enough to have one that has been purchased or passed down in your family... CHERISH it and for goodness sake don't use it as a rug!

You can easily teach yourself to hook rugs using the free tutorials offered at RugHooking101

Cheryl White is the Head "hooker" and "stripper" at http://www.RugHooking101.com

She has been practicing her craft for over 7 years and is committed to offering others any help she can provide. As a matter of fact, it's probably the least expensive hobby you'll ever do. No... forget that! If you're like me, you'll find tons of wool that you simply MUST HAVE for some future project and every time you find a new pattern, well... you NEED that one too!

Seriously, there are only 3 or 4 items that you need to start your first project:

1. You must have a "backing" fabric and wool strips. The most common backings are burlap, Monk's cloth, or a special type of Linen fabric.

I would strongly suggest that you stick to 100% wool or at worst 80% wool. Check with your Salvation Army or Abilities Unlimited stores for some good buys on wool. Buy only slacks and skirts. Jackets and blazers have an iron-on interfacing in them everywhere except the very back and the sleeves. The residue from the iron-on makes them almost useless. So unless you find an unusual color (pink, yellow, green or aqua) stay away from the jackets and blazers.

2. You need a hook. When my mother hooked rugs, her hook was made out of a nail that had been driven into a piece of "whittled" down wood and the other end was bent back to form a hook. (I wish I could get my hands on it... )

Today, there are several different shapes and sizes of hooks that you can choose from. Some folks even start out using a regular crochet hook. You will most likely use several different ones before you settle on the one that is right for you. It's strictly a matter of preference.

3. A frame to hold your backing tight. There are any number of frames available for rug hooking. Again, it's a matter of preference and your style of working.

I have a 92 year old friend who tucks one end of her backing under each leg and stretches it tightly. She's never used a frame of any sort and thinks it's silly of me to need and want to use one!

If you're just starting to hook and your funds are limited... you can buy a 16" embroidery hoop and clamp it to a tabletop with a "C" clamp... you need both hands to hook. However, you will find this cumbersome and spend a lot of time loosening the clamp so that you can twist and turn your project.

The most widely used frames use a metal "gripper" that holds your backing in place. The gripper makes it extremely easy to adjust your hooking area whenever needed. There are lap frames that allow you take your hooking with you wherever you go. They can rotate 360" to make hooking any area a snap. There are floor models that allow you to sit in your easy chair and adjust your frame comfortably for hooking. The gripper frames are more expensive... but they are well worth the expense.

I have several frames that I use at different times for different projects. But my favorite is the oak sit-on frame with the gripper that has a 12X16 hooking area.

4. Scissors... Any style will do for starters, but you really need a pair of embroidery scissors or a pair that has an offset handle. The bent handle allows you to get close to the hooked area to clip the ends of your wool. You'll also need a pair of regular scissors to cut your backing and wool.

Here are some "oh, I've got that already" or "that would be nice to have." things...

* Mechanical wool cutter (we'll talk in detail about those in another article - but you can start by using a rotary cutter wheel)

* Sewing machine for attaching the rug binding... unless you want to do that by hand, which is no big deal.

* Steam iron for steaming your project after you're finished hooking it.

* Textile dyes and measuring spoons for dyeing your wool once you get HOOKED on rug hooking. (My husband loves to tell everyone that he's married to a"hooker" and "stripper"!)

* Misc. tools... permanent marker, ruler, tape measure, needle and thread, and tracing paper.

Folks, that's all you really need to hook a rug! I have a lot of excellent info on this fascinating craft.

Cheryl White is the Head "hooker" and "stripper" at http://www.RugHooking101.com

She has been practicing her craft for over 7 years and is committed to offering others any help she can provide. Of all the Hawaiian flowers out there, the most attractive and popular are strung onto leis, to be bestowed on special occasions.

Hawaiian leis are available in many different places. Obviously, most people know these assortments of Hawaiian flowers can be found on the Hawaiian islands. But the fact is that they can be found in many other places as well. There are many different groups and businesses that make leis that actually use Hawaiian flowers, even though the business are based somewhere else in the world.

Many of these businesses have Hawaiian flowers specially shipped from Hawaii to anywhere else in the world. While this can be a very effective way to collect Hawaiian flowers, there are pitfalls as well. The biggest problem can occur when flowers are ordered, but not delivered in a timely fashion. If they are not delivered timely, there can be big problems when the leis are made because they may not be fresh.

If you are interested in making leis from Hawaiian flowers, here are some guidelines. You will need Hawaiian flowers (dendrobium orchids are a popular choice, but a lot of different flowers can be used), some string, and a long lei needle (these are bought specially and are generally 3" to 4" long):

Step 1: In order to make a lei from Hawaiian flowers, first hold the blossom flat in one of your hands. Insert the needle very carefully through the bottom part of the flower. Pull the needle from the bottom and through the center.

Step 2: After you have completed the first step, push the blossom down onto the lei needle. This process should be repeated until you have something around five or six blossoms around the needle. You can have more or less, but about five or six is really the best amount of blossoms to start off with.

Step 3: When step 2 is completed, use your free hand and wrap it around the flowers. Pull the needle first, and then pull the twine softly through each of the flowers. This process should be repeated as many times as you need to repeat it until the lei is the length that it needs to be.

The process for making Hawaiian leis is fairly simple, but it does require a good bit of skill and practice to make the leis look neat and tidy without destroying the blooms. Depending on where you live, there may be classes offered that teach people how to make Hawaiian leis. Of course, the best way to learn how to make leis from Hawaiian flowers is to take a course offered by somebody who has done it.

Often, vacationers to Hawaii can find classes on lei-making. If you aren't sure how you can be environmentally friendly while still enjoying your favourite hobbies, then keep reading. The easiest way to be environmentally conscious is to look at the products you buy. Look for products that are made from renewable resources, are produced without using chemicals or that divert items from landfills. Here's a list of 10 yarns that do just that.

1. Alpaca/Llama EcoSoft Yarn: Incredibly soft, this yarn is made from 80% llama fleece and 20% alpaca fleece. It's naturally hypoallergenic and non-shedding. Best of all, it can be machined washed on the gentle cycle in cold water.

2. Bamboo Yarn: This yarn is made from 100% bamboo. Bamboo is a wonderful renewable resource, as it can grow at a rate of up to three to four feet a day, depending on the climate it is grown in. The bamboo yarn comes in 16 different colours and has a soft and silky feel to it.

3. Corn Yarn: One of the newer yarns out on the market, it is made from corn fibers. This produces a yarn that has a flat, but wide strand. It can also go in both the washer and dryer, making it very easy to take care of.

4. 100% Hemp: This yarn also comes from a renewable resource, one that is at the top of the list as hemp produces more fiber, oil and protein than any other plant out there. Hemp fibers are also very strong, which will help your knitted pieces to last even longer.

5. Nepalese Recycled Silk Sari Yarn: It is made in Nepal with the scraps of silk fabric that are left over from the process of making saris. Not only does this create more jobs for the local women, but it also saves the silk scrapes from being thrown into a landfill.

6. 100% Organic Cotton: Made from 100% organically grown cotton without the use of agricultural chemicals. Natural dyes are used to give colour to the chunky yarn that is perfect to use for cable knits.

7. Organic Marino Yarn: It's made from 100% certified organic wool. No harsh chemicals are used to process the wool. Soft and durable wash after wash.

8. Recycled Sarongs Yarn: Workers take recycled Balinese sarongs and make hand-spun yarn from them. The proceeds from all sales are used to provide health care, education and shelter to families in Nepal and Indonesia. How great is that?

9. SeaSilk Yarn: You guessed it - this yarn is made in part from seaweed. About 30% of the yarn is made from seaweed fiber and the remaining 70% is made from silk. It is hand dyed in rich, vibrant colours that makes it perfect for bold knits.

10. Soysilk Yarn: It's made from soy proteins that are spun into yarn. Since it is made from soy, this yarn is yet another one that comes from a renewable resource. It has a silk like texture, it is soft and best of all, it keeps you warm.

Please visit http://www.beautifulcreations.ca./Needlework/Yarn.htm to check out even more types of environmentally friendly yarn that are available to you. For my example folder, I created a folder for Poems and Quotes. As a busy homeschooling mother I want the poems and quotes for my children to memorize in an easy to store and attractive folder. It is easy to locate and is eye-candy!

Materials Needed:

1. 2 -12x12" matching patterned papers 2. Manila folder (regular size) 3. Black cardstock (8 ½ x 11") 4. White rubber stamp ink (I used Stampin' Up's) 5. Making Memories brand Alphabet rub-ons 6. Rubber stamps 7. Paper adhesive such as mod podge

Directions:

Lay the paper that you wish to go on the front of the folder, inside the folder and trace the pattern from the front. Cut out. Adhere the cut out paper to the front of the folder.

Lay the paper you wish to line the inside of the folder inside the folder and trace. Cut out and adhere to the inside with an adhesive that will not wrinkle the paper as it dries.

Turn the 8 ½ x 11" paper horizontally and cut out a two inch strip of paper. Rubber stamp your favorite sayings or patterns with white ink. Adhere and to the bottom of the front. Apply rub-on words to the front of the folder wherever you desire. Use your creativity and add extra embellishments, ribbons, buttons, and more.

These folders are perfect for carrying papers in style, storing specific articles or instructions. Make according to themes or for your family night activities.

Shiloah Baker is a homeschooling mother of seven living in North Carolina. You will need to work as quickly as possible because once the embossing paste is applied it will soon begin to dry.

2- Use a palette knife to apply the paste to the stencil. Smooth it over the stencil just as you would apply icing to a cake taking care not to lift the pallet knife off until all areas have been covered. Then scrape off the excess paste by holding the palette knife at a slight angle pulling it down across the surface of the stencil.

3- Any excess paste should be immediately placed back into the pot and the lid closed tightly to avoid it drying out.

4- Wash the stencil in warm soapy water as soon as you can to avoid the paste drying on the stencil as this can be a real pain to remove later on.

5- You can add glitter to your image at this point if you wish which will give the image a sparkly look.

6- Once you have carefully removed the stencil leave the image to dry for twenty to forty minutes.

Embossing paste can be used on a variety of stencils and will always make your card making ideas stand out. The stencils themselves can also be used as a template for normal embossing, heat embossing and also to draw around.

When attaching your finished image to your card always ensure that the image is totally dry. If you smudge the paste it is impossible to remove the mistake at a later point. Never try to dry the embossing paste with a heat gun as this can cause the embossing paste to over heat and crack.

You may find the drying time varies depending on the humidity of where you are. Some images will require over half an hour to dry while others will take even longer. To test the image is dry lightly touch it with the tip of your finger being careful not to smudge it.

The best thing you can do with embossing paste is to experiment. Add color using chalks after your image has dried. Add glitter when wet and try different colors of pastes. Most importantly the color will change depending on what color card or paper you are using.

Although this method is a little bit on the messy side it is fun and a great way of creating 3D images to your card making ideas. The technique can also be used for scrapbooking and even decorating items around your home.

Vicki Churchill writes for several sites that specialize in Card Making Ideas. Including helpful step by step guides, tips and ideas to use when Card Making.
She is also the owner of a site that is dedicated to
href="http://www.vickisscrapbookideas.com">Scrapbook Ideas

Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Vicki_Churchill

Choosing Realistic Model Railroad Scenery

Landscaping and picking out the scenery can be one of the more fun things that you can do with your model railroads. You are the person who gets to decide just how you want it to look.

You can make it look as realistic or imaginary as you choose. Creating your display just takes an idea, supplies and a little time.

The first thing you need is your idea or plan.

- Do you want to copy something you've seen somewhere else?

- Do you want to recreate some historical place?

- Are you more likely to create a one of a kind scene to delight your viewers?

Once you've decided on your theme and to be successful, you will need to make sure you don't stray from it. There will be inconsistencies if you change or mix styles in your project and that will detract from the overall impact.

Staying consistent will enable the people.who are observing your project to find all the small details that you have added to make it so special.

Once you have picked your theme you need to work on where you will put your tracks and the landscaping. It can be more advantageous to first put in your turns or switches and then add your terrain than vice versa.

Your next step is to collect the items that you think you will want to use. Some you may already have around the house, others you may want to purchase from dealers or even a local hobby shop if you have one near. Just remember what your original design plan is so you don't stray from it. Just because you like the look of something doesn't mean that it will suit your project. Some common materials that you can gather are:

1. A Table or Stand

2. An outdoor grade plywood sheet for the base of a stand

3. Glue

4. Crushed stone, dirt or gravel as well as well as twigs and plants for ground cover

5. Touch up paint and paint for the background and the base

6. Poster board, papers etc for texturing

7. Blocks and sheets of Styrofoam for shaping things like mountains

Some other items you may include:

- Fiberglass or plaster

- Powder, cayenne pepper, salt and pepper for adding texture and color

- Cork paper or board

- Roofing tar for roads

- Caulk and adhesives for holding items secure

Do you have solid model train tables under your layout? You'll need them to hold all your equipment as your railroad grows.

Keep YOUR knitting on the "Cutting Edge" with FREE patterns.

Listen to Korbin Newlyn as he shares his insights as an expert author and an avid writer in the field of fine apparel.

* A ball handle hook

If you cannot find a class to take, there are illustrated books also available to help those who want to learn about the lei-making process.

When making leis with Hawaiian flowers, many people begin to gain a greater appreciation for the beauty of these flowers.

Anne Clarke writes numerous articles for Web sites on gardening, parenting, fashion, and home decor.
